HALTON HILLS (GEORGETOWN) NEIGHBOURHOODS

"DELREX"

The “Delrex” subdivision was another large development that was added after developments in “Old Georgetown” and the “Park Area”.   In the 1950s, Rex Heslop, the builder of Rexdale in Toronto, built the” Delrex” subdivision.  The name Delrex is actually a combination of 2 names; Rex and his wife Delma.  In the 1950s and 1960s this area was referred to as Georgetown East.  At one time, much of the area was orchards and now this mature neighbourhood offers tree-lined streets and large mature lots with a variety of Bungalows, split-levels & two storey homes.

Some of the builders were Benrock Homes, Skopit Associates, Whimpey Homes Ltd. and Alcan Design Homes Limited.

Skopit Associates had 9 popular models some of which may sound familiar are are referred to today due to their great designs.
The 9 models were: The Meadowlark, The Flamingo (a 4 level 3 bedroom sidesplit with a single garage), one of my favorite models, the Cardinal (a 3 bedroom bungalow with 2 baths and a single car garage), The Larkfield, The Sunflower (4 bedroom, 2 bath bungalow with a single garage), The Cambridge (4 bedroom, 3 bath, master with a 2 pc ensuite, 2-storey home with single garage), The Country Squire (4 bedroom backsplit with a single car garage), The Greenfield, and The Stanton.
Skopit homes can be found on Delrex, Dawson, Garnet, Rexway, Stockman, Faludon, Lewis, Pennington, Greystone, Danridge, Hawks Place, Metcalfe, Flamingo Court, and several  other streets in central Georgetown.

I believe many of the Alcan
Universal Homes were factory built and that some of the models are Huron (3 bedroom bungalow with a carport), Belvedere (3 bedroom bungalow with a breezeway between the house and garage),the MacGregor (a 3 bedroom ranch style bungalow), the Georgian (a 5 bedroom, 2 bath, 2-storey home with a single garage, and the popular Avon model (a 3 level backsplit home with 3 bedrooms & a double garage).  Some of their homes can be seen on Jessop, Airedale, Baylor, Fagan & Chelvin,
Both G.N.C. homes and Alcan Homes had some identical plans that they built in Ottawa. Perhaps they were built in the same factory - just under different banners?  Many of the Alcan Homes built from the late 60's to mid 70''s have aluminum wiring.  At the time, the price of copper was very high so aluminum became a more cost-effective alternative; especially for an aluminum foil company.

In addition to Delrex Boulevard, the main street that runs through this neighbourhood; some of other streets consist of Marilyn Crescent, Faludon Drive, Norton Crescent, McGilvray, McIntyre Crescent, Mackenzie Drive, Hale Drive, Prince Charles Drive, Sargent Road, Weber Drive and Raylawn Crescent.

The “Delrex” subdivision also offers several quiet and child-friendly courts.  There’s even a section dedicated to fine poets with streets such as Byron, Shelley & Carole.

The following streets have homes that back onto Hungry Hollow with some spectacular views of the ravine: Eden Place, Irwin Crescent, Dawson Crescent, Stockman Crescent, Lucinda Place, Heslop Court, Rexway Drive, Chipper Court, Noble Court, Danridge Crescent, Metcalfe Court, Regan Crescent, Chelvin Drive and Flamingo Court.

This is a large subdivision with lots of parks, and depending on your location, it can be a short walk to the Georgetown Marketplace , grocery stores, and restaurants.
